Lent is the church season that emphasizes repentance, which lasts for 40 days plus six Sundays. It is patterned after the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. In the ancient church, Lent was a time for new converts to be prepared for their baptism at the Easter Vigil.
Some may say Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. A Lenten “practice” is optional and can hold for some a spiritual discipline of fasting or abstinence, an added Bible Study, prayer, devotions, or works of service. This Lent we will concentrate on the marks of discipleship and practice ou discipleship through participation in ELCA World Hunger's 40 Days of Giving.

Personal Bible Reading and Reflection
A simple way to practice scripture reading is just to dive in and read a gospel. Begin with Mark, it is the shortest gospel (16 short chapters) and is easily read in 40 days in just a few minutes a day set aside to do this.
And/Or
Spend a few minutes each day in an undisturbed place, quietly sitting in the presence of God. Prayer may become part of this time or not, but, more importantly, take the time to listen for God’s voice.
